Generative Engine Optimization: How Brands Get Cited in AI Answers

Generative engine optimization is the practice of making your content the source an AI assistant reaches for when it writes an answer. There is no position to win, so the target is being quotable rather than being ranked, and most of the work is writing and credibility rather than technical SEO.

Search rewarded the page that ranked. Generative engines reward the page that can be quoted. That is a smaller change than it sounds and a much bigger one than most marketing teams have priced in.

Generative engine optimization, usually shortened to GEO, is the practice of making your content the source an assistant reaches for when it writes an answer. There is no position one to win. There is a paragraph, written fresh for each person who asks, assembled from whatever the model considers worth repeating. Either your sentence is in there or somebody else’s is.

The term came out of academic research rather than the agency world, which is unusual and probably why it survived intact for a while before the checklist industry got hold of it. What follows is the working version: what actually makes a page citable, what the technical floor is, and which parts of this are genuinely new versus repackaged.

What generative engine optimization actually is

Three things, in descending order of how much they matter and ascending order of how often they are discussed.

Being quotable. Writing in a way that a model can lift a passage from your page and drop it into an answer without hedging, qualifying or rewriting it into mush. This is a writing problem. It is roughly seventy per cent of the work and it gets the least attention.

Being credible. Being the kind of source an engine leans on, which is mostly about who else vouches for you, not what you say about yourself. This is a communications problem.

Being readable by machines. Crawler access, rendering, structure, schema. This is the technical floor. It is necessary, it is quickly done, and it is where most GEO advice stops because it is the part that fits in a checklist.

Why citation replaced position

The old deal was simple. Rank well, get the click, own the page the reader lands on.

The new arrangement removes the middle step for a growing share of questions. The reader asks, the assistant answers, and the reader leaves satisfied without visiting anything. Your influence on that person happened entirely through a sentence they did not know was yours.

A reader who never visits your page can still arrive at your position. That is the whole opportunity, and it is also why click-based measurement now under-reports what content is doing.

This has an awkward consequence worth stating plainly: GEO can succeed while your traffic falls. You can be cited constantly, shape how an entire category is described, and watch sessions decline. Any programme measured only on sessions will read that as failure and correct in exactly the wrong direction.

What makes a passage quotable

This is the part that is genuinely a craft, so it is worth being specific.

A model assembling an answer is looking for text it can use with minimal modification. That favours writing with particular properties, most of which good editors have always liked and marketing departments have spent twenty years sanding off.

Self-containment. The passage has to survive being lifted out of your page and dropped into a stranger’s answer. A sentence that opens with “as we saw above” or “this means” is unusable on its own. Write paragraphs that make sense cold.

One claim per sentence. Compound sentences carrying three ideas are hard to quote and easy to misquote. A model splitting them apart often keeps the wrong half.

Specificity over confidence. “Leading provider of innovative solutions” gives an assistant nothing to repeat. “Tracks press across 5,000 sources in 40 languages” is quotable because it says something checkable. Vague claims are not neutral, they are invisible.

Dates on anything that moves. Figures, versions, prices, headcounts, availability. Undated claims are risky for a model to repeat and get discounted accordingly. A dated claim is a safer thing to quote, and a stale undated one that gets quoted anyway is worse than silence.

Plain statements of fact before interpretation. Lead with what is true, then explain why it matters. The first sentence is the one that gets lifted.

Definitions written as definitions. If your page explains what something is, put the definition in one sentence, early, without preamble. This is the single highest-return sentence on most pages, and it is usually buried under two paragraphs of scene-setting.

A useful test: take any paragraph on your page, read it aloud to someone who has not seen the rest, and see whether it stands up. If it needs the preceding paragraph, a model will need it too, and will probably skip you for someone easier.

Page structure that gets read

One question per page. A page answering four questions competently will lose to four pages answering one each. This is the most common structural mistake and the most expensive, because it is the one that requires rewriting rather than editing.

The answer near the top. Not the background, not the history of the category, not why the topic matters. The answer, in the first hundred words or so, then the depth underneath it for the humans who want it. This is the inverted pyramid, which newsrooms worked out a century ago and marketing keeps rediscovering.

Headings that are real questions. Not clever, not abstract. If somebody would type it, use it. A heading that matches the question being asked is a strong signal about what the section underneath contains.

Lists and tables, used honestly. Both are disproportionately liftable because their structure is unambiguous. That is a reason to use them where the content is genuinely a list or genuinely a comparison, and not a reason to chop prose into bullets, which strips out the reasoning that made the prose worth citing.

A short answer block. A compact, self-contained statement of the page’s core answer, phrased so it can be quoted verbatim. Every page on this journal ends with one for exactly that reason.

The technical floor

Quick to fix, easy to get catastrophically wrong, and the one place where a single line in a file can remove you from the entire answer layer.

Check what you are blocking. AI crawlers identify themselves: GPTBot for OpenAI, ClaudeBot for Anthropic, PerplexityBot, CCBot for Common Crawl, Google-Extended, Applebot-Extended. Plenty of sites blocked all of them in 2023 as a reflex, and a good number of those decisions were made by someone who has since left.

One nuance regularly gets this wrong in both directions. Google-Extended controls whether your content trains Gemini. It does not control Google’s AI Overviews, which read through ordinary Googlebot. Blocking Google-Extended will not take you out of Overviews, and blocking Googlebot to achieve that takes you out of search entirely. Decide deliberately, and write down who decided.

Serve content in the HTML. Many crawlers do not execute JavaScript, or execute it inconsistently. Text that only appears after a client-side fetch may simply not exist as far as an engine is concerned. If your key claims arrive via JavaScript, check what a plain fetch actually returns.

Structured data, used for what it is. Schema does not make a claim true or quotable, but it does tell a machine what a page is, who published it, when it was updated and what question it answers. Article, FAQPage, Organization and BreadcrumbList cover most needs. Two rules: mark up only what is visible on the page, and never mark up an FAQ whose answers appear nowhere in the copy.

Keep it fast and reachable. Timeouts and rate limits fail closed. A source that is slow to fetch is a source that gets skipped in favour of one that is not.

On llms.txt, the proposed convention for giving models a clean summary of a site: it costs an hour, it is genuinely useful as a forcing function for writing your own one-paragraph definition, and adoption by the major engines is unproven. Treat it as cheap insurance rather than a lever.

The half that is not on your website

Here is where GEO diverges from SEO most sharply, and where teams with a purely technical plan stall.

Models weight sources by how trusted they are, and almost nothing you publish about yourself counts as independent evidence. When an engine is deciding what to say about your company, the material doing the heavy lifting is usually press coverage, reference sources, review platforms, analyst notes, documentation and forum threads. Your own site is one input, and on contested claims it is one of the weaker ones.

Which means a substantial part of GEO is media relations, wearing a different hat:

Be described consistently everywhere. Use the same one-sentence definition of what you do on your site, in your boilerplate, in your profiles and in every briefing. Consistent phrasing is how a model learns that scattered references are the same entity. Inconsistent phrasing is how you end up blended with a company that shares half your name.

Get facts corroborated off your own domain. A claim on your site is a claim. The same fact in trade press or a reference source is a fact, and it is weighted like one.

Read your citations. When an engine shows its sources, that list tells you exactly which third parties are currently speaking for you. What does not work

Worth saying, because the checklist industry has arrived.

Keyword stuffing, in any of its new outfits. Repeating a phrase does not make a model more likely to quote you. It makes the passage worse to quote, which is the opposite of the goal.

Volume for its own sake. Fifty thin pages generated to cover every long-tail variant is the 2012 playbook with a new engine attached. Thin pages are exactly the ones a model has least reason to lean on, because there is no substance to lift.

Hiding the good part. Gated content, paywalled specifications, the real numbers behind a form. If a model cannot read it, it cannot cite it, and the competitor who published theirs openly becomes the source of record for your category.

Prompt injection in your page copy. Instructions hidden in your HTML aimed at steering a model are the new keyword stuffing, they are detected, and they are a genuinely bad look when a journalist finds them in your source.

Anything sold as a GEO score. There is no ranking to be scored against. A single composite number here cannot be checked against anything, which is precisely why it is easy to sell.

Measuring it

Four honest measures, which will be familiar if you have read the AI reputation management pillar, because they are the same instrument pointed at a different question.

Hold the prompt set constant, record the date and the engine, run each prompt several times because answers vary, and report the four separately. Citation is the one most specific to GEO: presence can be inherited from what a model already knows, while a citation means a page of yours was read and used, which is the thing your content work actually caused.

Where GEO sits next to SEO

Generative engine optimization is not a replacement for SEO, whatever the deck says. Generative engines still lean heavily on a search index to decide what to read in the first place, so a page that cannot be found conventionally is rarely a page that gets cited. Crawlability, speed, internal linking and genuine authority all still matter, and they matter for both.

The honest framing is that GEO is a layer on top of competent SEO, and it shifts where the effort goes. Less on title tags and internal link equity. More on whether the first paragraph states something true and specific enough to be worth repeating, and on whether anybody other than you has said it.

Which is a strange place for the discipline to land, and a rather encouraging one. After a decade of optimising for machines by writing worse, the machines now reward writing that is clear, specific, checkable and corroborated. That is just good publishing. The novelty is that it finally pays.
